Asbestos is a natural mineral generally found in large deposits in both the USA and Canada. Asbestos was used because it has some desirable properties like heat resistance, high tensile strength, and being impervious to chemical reaction. However, research has proven it can have extremely adverse effects on people. Many of its uses have been banned or limited throughout the USA.
It is quite possible your home has asbestos containing material somewhere. Before you disturb surfaces such as drywall, plaster, sheet flooring or "popcorn" ceiling textures, call us to test for asbestos on the surfaces you intend to renovate. Burnside Enterprises services the entire Front Range including Colorado Springs, Denver, Arvada, and Pueblo.
Home owners & contractors may be planning to renovate a single room of a house or maybe even a single feature such as a ceiling texture or flooring. A full house asbestos inspection may be cost prohibitive because of the sample quantities required. It might be advisable to only inspect for asbestos containing materials (ACM) in the area planned for renovation. This would keep the samples quantities to a minimum and still allow the contractor or home owner to have knowledge of asbestos exposures.
This type of inspection is very thorough and the entire structure is inspected for ACM. The inspector will perform a walk-thru of the structure to determine possible ACM. He will inventory the different "homogeneous" areas and other types of suspected ACM components. Homogeneous areas will have a minimum of 3 samples taken. Homogeneous areas greater than 1000 SF but less than 5000 SF will have at least 5 samples and areas greater than 5000 SF will have a minimum of 7 samples. Items such as flooring or pipe insulation will also require samples to be taken or the material can be "Assumed" to contain asbestos and noted in the report.
As you can imagine, there will be numerous samples required to be analyzed by the lab and the sampling cost can make a comprehensive asbestos inspection much more expensive than a limited inspection. However, a comprehensive inspection is the most reliable way to ascertain the extent of ACM in a facility.
